About Department of Laws

Right from its inception, the Department has been steadfast in its commitment to provide an unparalleled educational experience to its students, blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Originally established at Lahore in 1889, it was re-established at Shimla in 1948, shifted to Jalandhar in 1950, and finally re-located at the Panjab University Campus at Chandigarh in 1959.

Over the years, the Department has grown from strength to strength, evolving with the changing needs of the legal profession. The curriculum is constantly updated to reflect the latest developments in the legal field. The Department is always in action to create new opportunities for its students by providing practical training to LL.B. students in the form of Seminars, Presentations and Moot Court Competitions. Special lectures are delivered by eminent Academicians, Judges and advocates. As part of the curriculum, students have to undergo internship annually. The students of the Department are sent to the Supreme Court of India, Parliament, various National Commissions, law firms and eminent advocates as part of the practical training programme.

The Department takes pride in being the alma mater of two Chief Justices of India, Justices of Supreme Court, numerous Chief Justices and Justices of the High Courts, judges, civil servants, legal officers, scholars, legal professionals, and a significant number of renowned figures in the legal field.

The Department actively and effectively runs a Legal Aid Clinic-cum-Arbitration Centre as well as a Placement Cell. The Department regularly publishes two journals- Panjab University Law Review (for the faculty and legal scholars) and MAGLAW, a Law Journal especially for the students. Beyond the classroom, the department offers a vibrant and supportive environment that encourages students to pursue their passions.

The Department of Laws at the Panjab University stands as a shining testament to the enduring legacy of legal education. Its commitment to academic excellence, has therefore given rise to MAGLAW, as a medium for the law students to express their views. It gives an opportunity to the students to inculcate analytical skills, critical thinking; and to deliberate on the crucial issues of socio-legal importance by providing conducive environment for research
